Terezín
Terezín is a town in the Czech Republic, about an hour from Prague by road.
As well as the walled garrison town, there is a military fortress - intended to provide protection from the Prussian army. Built for Emperor Joseph II in 1780-1790, it is named after his mother Maria Theresa.
The fortress was used as a concentration camp and Gestapo prison during World War II, with prisoners passing through on their way to places such as Auschwitz. Although Terezín was not an extermination camp, some 30,000 plus of the 150,000 or so prisoners who were sent there died.
